Airbnb Host Fee 15.5%

Cover of the Cavmir video Airbnb Host Fee 15.5%

The video plays from YouTube when you press play. Nothing loads from YouTube before that.

Airbnb host fee explained: the 15.5% service fee on a $1,000 booking, and what you keep booking direct.

Airbnb's help page says most hosts pay a 15.5% service fee, and the entire fee is deducted from the host's payout. On a $1,000 booking that is $155 to Airbnb and $845 to you. This 42-second video shows the line on Airbnb's own page, then puts one example week side by side: booked on Airbnb, and booked on your own website, where there is no Airbnb fee and card processing is the cost. The Numbers, Step by Step

On a $1,000 Airbnb booking: 15.5% of $1,000 is $155, so $845 is what you keep (84.5%).

Example week, not a quote: $1,200 a night for 7 nights is $8,400.

Booked on Airbnb: 15.5% of $8,400 is $1,302.00 in Airbnb fees.

Booked on your own website: card processing at Stripe's standard U.S. rate, 2.9% plus 30 cents, is $243.90 on $8,400.

The difference: $1,302.00 minus $243.90 is $1,058.10, shown in the video as +$1,058.

Your own rate, length of stay and booking value change every figure. The free fee calculator does the same sums with yours.

What Airbnb's Page Says

Most hosts pay 15.5%, remaining hosts typically pay 14% to 16%, and hosts pay 16% for listings in Brazil and Mexico. Before the single fee, most hosts paid 3% and guests paid 14.1% to 16.5% on top. Airbnb says the split fee is being phased out.

What the Example Leaves Out

The comparison is about fees only. A booking on your own website still needs a website and a way to be found, and it does not come with Airbnb's guest traffic. Stripe's standard rate is for domestic cards; its pricing page lists extra charges for international cards.

How to Run Your Own Numbers

  1. Open a recent payout in your Airbnb Earnings and find the Airbnb service fee on it.
  2. Put your nightly rate and nights booked into the free Airbnb fee calculator at cavmir.com/resources/airbnb-fee-calculator/.
